When the Periodic Table Lands at Concordia
Have you noticed the large periodic table installed on the exterior wall near the Physics Room on the sixth-floor corridor? This impressive display is the outcome of this year’s cross-curricular learning project jointly designed by the Chemistry Department and the Visual Arts Department for Secondary 3 students. The theme of the project, “The Artistic Journey of Elements,” tasked students with creating a three-dimensional periodic table wall featuring all 118 elements.
Each student produced a 3D artwork based on a selected element. Their work not only needed to accurately present the chemical properties of the element but also had to incorporate the design and drawing skills learned in Visual Arts lessons—such as layout and composition, English calligraphy lettering, colour coordination, line expression, and the use of acrylic markers.
Once all artworks were completed, mounting all 118 pieces neatly on the wall became another challenge. Teachers and students carefully measured and marked the wall before installing the artworks with suitable adhesives. The spectacular periodic table wall was finally completed, bringing a vibrant fusion of science and art to our campus.
